Go from Mestia: a seat in a shared van is up to 70 GEL (about $27) return for 60 to 90 minutes each way and four to five hours in the villages, or a small-group tour from about $36 to $49 a person. Start in Chazhashi, the UNESCO-listed hamlet with the densest towers, walk up to Lamaria church for the view of Shkhara (5,203 m), and see the small museum in Chvibiani for 10 GEL, cash. Stay a night if you can: guesthouse rooms for two were 50 to 95 GEL for a Saturday in October 2026, and the light on Shkhara is early morning. With a full day, walk the flat 16 km to the Shkhara glacier. From July to mid October the sealed road over the Zagari pass links Ushguli to Kutaisi in about four hours; in winter it closes and most guesthouses do too.

Ushguli is a community rather than a village: Murkmeli, Chazhashi, Chvibiani and Zhibiani strung along the Patara Enguri river at about 2,100 m, with Lamjurishi above the top one, about 70 families or 200 to 300 people in all, snow on the ground for six months of the year. It is one of the highest permanently inhabited places in Europe, though not the highest in Georgia (that is Bochorma in Tusheti), and the isolation that kept its towers standing is the same isolation that made the road from Mestia a half-day ordeal until it was sealed. Getting to Ushguli
Everything runs through Mestia except the Kutaisi road. The facts on the shared vans are from wander-lush.org's transport guide of 17 August 2026 via our trek page; the tour prices were read on each GetYourGuide listing on 22 September 2026.

GoTrip does not list Ushguli as a pickup or drop-off point, so a fixed-price driver gets you as far as Mestia (from 334 GEL per car from Kutaisi, 634 from Tbilisi on 22 September 2026) and the van does the last hour. If you sleep in Ushguli and want to leave down the valley the next day, walk to the main bridge in Chazhashi mid afternoon, where the day-trip vans load for Mestia, and ask; your guesthouse can usually book the seat the night before.
What to see in four hours
Chazhashi first. The lower hamlet by the bridge has the densest cluster of towers and the narrowest lanes; walk them before the other vans arrive. A few towers can be climbed for a small fee and one holds a small tower museum, closed every time wander-lush's writer passed in 2026, so do not plan around it. Above the lanes, the Church of the Saviour sits on a hillock reached by a metal staircase (mind your head under the arch), and the path beside it climbs to Queen Tamar's Tower, a community tower rather than a family one, the Supar or gathering place where the village decided things. You cannot climb it, but its foot gives the classic panorama: Chazhashi and Murkmeli below to the west, Chvibiani and Zhibiani up the valley with Shkhara behind. Mid morning light is best in summer and autumn. The tiny church of St George beside it has a carved door worth a minute.
Lamaria church. On a rocky shelf above Zhibiani at the top of the community, a cluster of one-storey stone buildings around a tower, 11th or 12th century, dedicated to Lamaria, the Svan goddess of harvest, cattle and childbirth who became identified with the Virgin Mary. Reach it by the steep road from the north-east or the footpath cut into the hillside on the south-west, push the gate, and cover your hair if you are a woman with one of the scarves at the door. Inside: a carved stone altar covering, icons, an embroidered curtain and faded ochre frescoes in the side passages. The huge iron pot in the corner of the yard is for sacrificial feasts. The view of the towers with Shkhara behind them is the picture on every poster, and it is real.
The Enguri valley viewpoint. A flat hilltop off the road near Lamaria, marked on Google Maps as the Enguri Valley Viewpoint, with a dirt track you can walk or drive: the full panorama of the Patara Enguri valley to Shkhara. Wander-lush's writers preferred sunrise, arriving about an hour after it because the sun takes time to clear the ridges, which is one more argument for the night.
Chvibiani and Zhibiani. The upper hamlets have towers and timber houses along lanes at right angles to the river; look east along the main lane of Chvibiani for the line of towers. Here too is the Ushguli ethnographic museum, a family tower lived in by ten people until 1950, now full of wood carvings and old photographs, 10 GEL cash in July 2026 (one tour listing quotes 20), and a second Cinema Dede that loops the Svaneti-made film Dede at 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 19:00 and 21:00. Small shops sell Svan salt, biscuits and wool socks.
Murkmeli. The lowest hamlet, the first you reach from Mestia and the one the vans skip: a few houses, towers in the worst repair of the four, and the small Matskhovari church behind a family's garden fence, who let visitors through if asked. Lamaria to Matskhovari on foot is 30 to 45 minutes downhill.

Insurance is not optional here: Georgia has required visitors to hold medical cover since 1 January 2026, the nearest hospital is Mestia's small one, and anything serious means Zugdidi or a helicopter. Our insurance guide explains the rule and which policies cover walking at 2,000 m and above.
Eating in Ushguli
Home cooking, and better than you expect. Wander-lush's July 2026 picks, which we have not all tried ourselves, are Cafe Restaurant Murkvam in Chvibiani, inside an old stone house, for kubdari (the Svan meat pie) and matsoni with berry jam; Cafe Svaneti a little further up the same lane, with the menu on scraps of wood, for garlicky meat soup and shoti bread baked to order; Cafe Shumeri in Zhibiani for breakfast omelettes and Svan flower tea; and Agra in Murkmeli, a guesthouse whose restaurant is open all day and serves avocado and mango alongside mertsv, the local cheesy potato mash, with chicken and walnut sauce. Guesthouse dinners are the other half of the food here and are usually the best meal of the day; say yes when you book. Cash only, all of it.
Where to stay
Family guesthouses, all of them, spread across the four hamlets; Chazhashi and the lower part of Chvibiani are the central choice and the upper hamlets put you nearer Lamaria and the sunrise viewpoint. Most are on Booking.com with free cancellation and no prepayment, which is how we book them, and most close for the winter; the ones that stay open may not heat every room, so ask. Book July and August ahead, especially if you are finishing the trek here. Rooms are simple, dinner is the point, and the towers at dawn with nobody else in the lanes are why you came.
When to go
July, August and September, with September our pick and wander-lush's: drier, quieter, the first colour in the highlands, and every road open. July and August are the trek's peak and the guesthouses fill. The first weeks of October can still work, weather depending. From November the Kutaisi road closes and is not cleared, the Mestia road is maintained but can be hard going, most guesthouses shut, and there is no walking; Svaneti in winter is a skiing trip based in Mestia. May is early: snow on the higher trails and the trek's river at its worst.

So a day trip for two is about 160 to 190 GEL (about $60 to $75) before lunch, and a night adds 50 to 95 GEL plus dinner. Against that, a night is the best value in Svaneti. The trip planner fits Ushguli into a route with the fares we checked, and our 14-day itinerary gives it day 10.
Mistakes to avoid
- Prepaying a return seat at the Mestia stands. Too many travellers are let down. Book through your guesthouse or pay the driver.
- Doing it in the van's four hours and calling it done. The vans arrive together late morning. Sleep here and have Chazhashi to yourself at eight.
- Driving a rental up in October. The Ushguli road permission on Localrent ends on 30 September. Take the van.
- Arriving without cash. Nothing here takes a card and the ATMs stopped in Mestia.
- Trying Queen Tamar's castle after rain. The stream-bed path is steep and slippery when dry; wet, it is dangerous.
- Planning the Kutaisi road in winter. It is not cleared. Zagari is a July to October road.
