The official rate and the rate you get

The number in the box is the National Bank of Georgia's official rate for the day. It is a reference: nobody hands you lari at exactly that price. An exchange office buys your currency a little below it and sells a little above it, and your card uses its network's rate plus whatever your bank adds. The tool shows both, so you can see the gap before you pay it.

For dollars and euros the gap at a good window is tiny. We read Rico Credit's board on 1 October 2026, next to that morning's official rates, and it bought dollars at 2.6030 against the National Bank's 2.6047: 100 dollars bought 260.30 GEL instead of 260.47. Pounds and Swiss francs cost about 1 percent. Everything else on the board lost 3.5 to 8.7 percent, which is why we tell people to arrive with dollars, euros or a card rather than their home currency.

At the board itself, read the buy column: you are selling your currency, so the office's buy rate is yours, and "no commission" means nothing because the fee is inside the rate. Rico Credit is a chain with branches across Tbilisi and the other cities and a fair default; skip the desks in the airport arrivals hall, whose rates are consistently worse than in town. Our money guide has the fee-free ATMs and how much cash to carry.

Where each number comes from

The official rates are fetched from the National Bank when the site is built and baked into the page, so the converter works offline once loaded and never sends what you type anywhere. The card and window lines are estimates built on the figures below, and say so.

Figure and source Checked
Exchange ratesThe National Bank of Georgia's official rate for each of the 42 currencies it quotes, read from its public rates service every time this site is rebuilt, usually every day. If the service cannot be reached, the page falls back to the list saved on 1 October 2026 and prints that date instead 9 October 2026
Cash at a windowRico Credit's board of buy and sell rates on rico.ge, read at the same time as that day's National Bank rates. The margin is how far below the National Bank rate the window bought each currency; applying it to a later rate is our estimate 1 October 2026
Card feeMost home bank cards add 2 to 3 percent to foreign transactions; Wise and Revolut cards come close to the interbank rate. From our money guide September 2026

Frequently asked questions

How many lari is one US dollar?
On 9 October 2026 the National Bank of Georgia set 1 US dollar at 2.6019 GEL, so 100 dollars was 260.19 GEL and 100 GEL was 38.43 dollars. The lari has sat between roughly 2.6 and 2.8 to the dollar for a few years, so dividing a lari price by 2.6 gets you close enough at a restaurant.
How many lari is one euro or one pound?
On 9 October 2026: 1 euro = 2.9100 GEL and 1 British pound = 3.4342 GEL, by the National Bank of Georgia's official rate. A lari is about 0.34 euros or 0.29 pounds.
Should I change money at home or in Georgia?
In Georgia. The lari is not traded outside the region, so a bank at home either cannot sell it or prices it badly. Bring a card for the ATM, or clean dollar or euro notes: on 1 October 2026 Rico Credit bought dollars 0.1 percent and euros 0.2 percent below the National Bank rate, which is as close to the official rate as cash gets.
The card machine asks if I want to pay in my own currency. Should I?
No. Choose lari every time, at the ATM and at the card terminal. The home-currency offer is dynamic currency conversion, and the rate built into it is typically several percent worse than the one your own bank or card would give you.
Which currencies can I change in Georgia?
Dollars and euros everywhere, at the tightest margins. On 1 October 2026 Rico Credit's board also bought pounds, Swiss francs, Canadian dollars, yuan, Turkish lira, Armenian dram, Azerbaijani manat, UAE dirhams, roubles and Polish zloty, but at 0.7 to 8.7 percent below the National Bank rate. Anything else, change before you come or use a card.
Can I pay in dollars or euros in Georgia?
Not for everyday purchases. The lari is the only legal tender. Some hotels and tour operators quote in dollars or euros, but you pay in lari at the day's rate, by card or cash.
