Georgia packing list generator

Tell it when you are coming, where you are going and what you will do. It builds a checklist for that trip, with the reason behind every item and the month's temperatures, road closures and church rules folded in. Tick things off as you pack; the ticks stay in your browser.

Every item comes from a guide on this site verified in September 2026. Nothing you choose here leaves your browser.

Buy after landing, not before

  • Painkillers, plasters, rehydration salts, hand sanitiserPharmacies (the sign reads აფთიაქი) stand on almost every block in Tbilisi and in every town, most medicines are over the counter and the big chains stock European brands.
  • A refillable water bottle if you did not bring oneSold everywhere, and refilled at guesthouse kitchens and the mountain springs, which are the best water you will drink.

Leave at home

  • Formal clothesEven the good restaurants in Tbilisi have no dress code. Smart casual is as far as anyone goes.
  • A travel towelEvery hotel and guesthouse provides towels. The only exception is the sulfur baths, and you have not ticked those.
  • Tent, stove and sleeping bagThe main trekking routes are guesthouse to guesthouse. Bring a tent only if wild camping is the point of the trip.
  • The enormous suitcaseMarshrutka luggage wells are small, Tbilisi lifts are tiny and mountain guesthouse stairs are narrow. It becomes the enemy by day three.
  • Anything you would hate to loseGeorgia is safe, but expensive jewellery is pointless on a trail and in a marshrutka. Travel with the watch you do not mind scratching.

How the list is built

Georgia's problem for a packer is range, not exotica: a subtropical coast, a hot continental valley and an alpine north sit within four hours of each other, and a normal itinerary touches all three. So the list starts from the month, which sets the Tbilisi temperatures, the rain and the season's layers, then adds the mountain rule (roughly 6 degrees colder per 1,000 m, a warm layer whatever the month) as soon as you tick anywhere high. Places add their own items: pebble-beach shoes for the coast, room for bottles in Kakheti. Activities add the kit that our guides to each one say you need and nothing more, so ticking day hikes gives you poles and two litres of water, not crampons.

Two groups at the end are as important as the rest. Buy after landing is the list of things a Tbilisi pharmacy or supermarket sells on every block, so they should not take space in a cabin bag. Leave at home is the kit people bring and never use: formal clothes, a travel towel, a tent for routes that run guesthouse to guesthouse.

The two items you cannot buy at the airport

Everything else on the list can be bought or replaced in Tbilisi. These two are sorted at home, and both sit in the documents and tech groups whatever you tick: proof of travel insurance, which Georgia has required of visitors since 1 January 2026, and data that works when the plane door opens.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to dress conservatively in Georgia?
In cities, no: Tbilisi wears shorts, vest tops and summer dresses without comment. The strict dress codes are at churches and monasteries, where knees and shoulders are covered and women cover their hair. Tick churches and monasteries and the list adds the cover; outside religious sites, dress as you would in southern Europe.
What plugs does Georgia use?
Type C and Type F, the round two-pin European sockets, at 220 V and 50 Hz. Mainland Europeans need no adapter; UK, US, Australian and similar plugs do. Phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage; check hair dryers and straighteners.
Is travel insurance really required to enter Georgia?
Yes. Since 1 January 2026 visitors must hold travel insurance covering their stay, with a short list of exemptions, and border officers may ask for proof. The list puts the policy in the documents group whatever you tick, and asks for mountain rescue cover if you are hiking or skiing.
Why does the list want a warm layer in August?
Because Tbilisi and the mountains are two climates. Stepantsminda's July average low is 8°C against 20°C in Tbilisi, and the rule of thumb of about 6 degrees colder per 1,000 m holds well here. Tick the mountains or any hike and the layer stays on the list in every month.
Can I buy what I forgot in Tbilisi?
Almost everything: pharmacies on nearly every block, malls, supermarkets and a few outdoor shops with the basics. Hard to find are specific prescription medicines, your preferred sunscreen brand and good hiking boots, so the list keeps those in the bag and moves the rest to the buy-after-landing group.
Why are there no ski items when I ticked skiing?
Because the lifts run from the second half of December, so for other months the list tells you to check the season dates instead of packing kit you cannot use. Set the month to December, January, February or March and the ski group appears, with what to bring and what to rent in Gudauri.
