Tbilisi to Mestia 2026: Train, Van, Flight or Driver

Mestia is 463 km from Tbilisi and there is no fast way there by road. You can fly in under an hour when the weather allows, take the morning train to Zugdidi and a van up the gorge, sit nine hours in a direct marshrutka, ride an overnight coach, or book a driver for the whole day. We compare all of them with the times and fares read on 11 October 2026, and say which one we would take for each kind of trip.

Quick answer

Take the 08:15 train to Zugdidi (17 GEL second class, 5 hours 21 minutes) and the 40 GEL van that waits for it outside Zugdidi station, in Mestia by early evening for 57 GEL (about $22) all in. If the forecast is clear and you travel light, Vanilla Sky's flight from Natakhtari is 90 GEL and under an hour, with a free shuttle from First Republic Square two hours before. Three or four people with bags: a GoTrip driver from 634 GEL per car, 7 hours 18 minutes of driving. The 07:00 direct marshrutka (60 GEL, 9 to 10 hours) is the one we would skip, and if you can arrange it, arriving in Georgia at Kutaisi cuts the journey to a 50 GEL van or a 334 GEL driver.

Every road into Upper Svaneti funnels through Zugdidi and then up the Enguri gorge, which is why the journey from Tbilisi takes a full day whatever you do: 334 km of lowland highway to Zugdidi, then 130 km of mountain road that no vehicle does in under three hours. This page is the transport only. Our Mestia guide takes over when you arrive, the Svaneti guide covers the region, and the Svaneti loop is the self-drive version with Kutaisi and the Zagari Pass. The train to Zugdidi and the van up the gorge

One train a day runs from Tbilisi Central, the station on Station Square with its own metro stop, to Zugdidi. When we read tkt.ge on 11 October 2026 for Saturday 17 October it was train 870, a single-decker, leaving at 08:15 and arriving at 13:36, scheduled at 5 hours 21 minutes, with 202 second-class seats at 17 GEL (about $6.50), 27 first-class seats at 29 GEL and two business seats at 44 GEL still on sale. The same train shows for every date through 30 October, which is as far as the 20-day booking window reaches, and for 11 October itself there were none left. The single-deckers are older than the Batumi double-deckers: no Wi-Fi, no dining car, a socket per row in first class, which is why our trains guide calls the 12 GEL upgrade worth it on this line and not on the coast one. Buy food on Station Square before you board. The night train that every older blog describes stopped in 2020 and has not come back.

Tbilisi Central at 08:00. The Zugdidi train is the single-decker; the double-decker is the Batumi train, which leaves ten minutes earlier.

In Zugdidi the Mestia vans wait for the train. Cross the tracks, turn left, walk to the end of the platform and take the steps down to the street: in the season there are three or four Sprinters, in October one or two, and the fare was 40 GEL (about $15) in wander-lush's transport guide updated on 30 September 2026, 30 to 40 GEL in our own readings this year. The drive is about four hours with a stop near the Enguri dam, and the vans finish near Seti Square in the centre of Mestia, a walk from most guesthouses. That puts you in town around 18:00, which is why we tell people to plan their first walk for the morning after, as our Mestia guide says. If you would rather break the journey, Zugdidi station stores bags for 5 GEL, the Dadiani palace is a short Bolt ride away, and a second set of vans leaves at midday from a stand on the riverside past the market, so an overnight in Zugdidi costs you nothing in connections.

The direct marshrutka: 60 GEL and nine hours

Two vans leave Tbilisi for Mestia at 07:00: one from the car park outside Tbilisi Central on Station Square, with a handwritten sign at the lower entrance, and one from the Navtlughi intercity terminal beside Samgori metro, which our bus stations guide maps. Both are correct; the older blogs that name only one of them are not wrong, just incomplete. The fare was 60 GEL (about $23) when wander-lush checked on 30 September 2026, up from the 50 to 60 GEL in our readings earlier in the year, and the journey is nine to ten hours via Zugdidi and Jvari in a Sprinter with no luggage bay and one or two stops. It is 3 GEL more than the train and van, arrives at about the same time, and you spend the whole day in the same seat. We would take it only when the train is sold out, which in July and August it will be. Our marshrutka guide covers the ritual of paying the driver and claiming a seat.

The overnight coach

There is no night train, but there is a night coach. Metro Georgia's Tbilisi to Zugdidi service leaves at 22:30 and arrives at 04:30 for 30 GEL (about $12) on its booking page read on 11 October 2026; its Tbilisi departures use the Ortachala bus station on Dimitri Gulia Street, as our Didube guide records, and the site is in Georgian but the times and seat counts are readable. OmniBus Express runs the same route from Ortachala too (wander-lush lists a midday and a midnight coach at 35 GEL, about six hours); its timetable sits behind a search form we could not read, so check omnibusexpress.ge or tkt.ge for your date. From 04:30 in Zugdidi you wait for the midday vans from the riverside stand, so the coach is a way to be in Mestia by late afternoon having spent no daylight on the lowland half. It is not a way to arrive rested, and we would not do it with children.

The flight: 90 GEL and the weather

Vanilla Sky flies small propeller planes, operated by AK-Air Georgia, from Natakhtari airfield, 23 km north of Tbilisi near Mtskheta, to the airstrip at Mestia. Its schedule page, read on 11 October 2026, prices the Natakhtari to Mestia leg at 90 GEL (about $35) for an adult, 63 GEL for children aged 3 to 12 and nothing for infants on a lap, plus a 3.5 percent card surcharge that is not refunded if you cancel; Kutaisi to Mestia is 50 GEL. The flight is under an hour. A free shuttle leaves First Republic Square, on the corner of Kiacheli Street opposite the bicycle monument by the Radisson Blu Iveria, exactly two hours before departure, and the airline says the driver does not wait. The luggage limit is 15 kg per person including hand luggage, and a passport or ID is checked at boarding. Days with a flight are highlighted on the booking calendar at ticket.vanillasky.ge; wander-lush counted four to six a week in season with fewer in winter, and when a date shows nothing after you search, it is sold out. Online tickets can be refunded up to 72 hours before departure, never changed.

The catch is in the airline's own terms: the planes fly under visual flight rules and the decision is taken at the airfield, so cloud at either end cancels the flight, with the fare refunded to your card within 30 days. That is fine on the way in, when you lose a morning and take the train the next day, and dangerous on the way out, when the next seat may be days away and your international flight leaves tonight. Our rule is to fly up and come down by road, and never to book the flight on the day before a connection. In summer the seats go within days of release, so look as soon as the calendar opens for your month.

A fixed-price driver

For three or four people the driver is the comfortable answer and, per head, not far from the flight. We book on GoTrip, which we use ourselves: the price is per car, fixed before you confirm, with no deposit and stops included, so an hour at the Enguri dam, lunch in Zugdidi or the Dadiani palace cost nothing extra. GoTrip gives the route as 463 km and 7 hours 18 minutes of driving. The cheapest car listed on gotrip.ge on 11 October 2026 was 634 GEL (about $244), the next 650 GEL. Two cheaper splits are worth knowing: a driver to Zugdidi only was from 325 GEL for the 334 km, which leaves the 40 GEL van for the mountain, and from Kutaisi a driver to Mestia was from 334 GEL for 236 km and 4 hours 22 minutes. GoTrip showed no cars at all for Zugdidi to Mestia on its own, so the valley leg is the van or a Zugdidi taxi (50 to 60 GEL a seat in our readings this year).

The better plan: arrive at Kutaisi

If your flights are not booked yet, the honest advice is to skip Tbilisi for the Svaneti leg. Kutaisi is 236 km from Mestia against Tbilisi's 463, Wizz Air lands there from much of Europe, and the choices are better. The direct van leaves Kutaisi's central bus station on Chavchavadze Avenue for 50 GEL (about $19), cash at the desk; its official departure is 10:00 but in season the 17-seater fills from 07:30 and leaves when full, so wander-lush's station visit in September 2026 found vans going at 07:50 and 08:30, and in October arriving by 09:00 is enough. The journey is six and a half to seven and a half hours. Budget Georgia's shared transfer leaves its office at 2 Gelati Street by the Colchis Fountain at 08:00 and arrives at the Credo Bank on Tamar Mepe Street in Mestia at about 14:00, daily from May to October, listed from 80 GEL on 11 October 2026 (its page body says 120 GEL per person, so confirm when you book) with a private car for one to three people at 400 GEL; from November to April it runs on Fridays only. A GoTrip driver is from 334 GEL. And Vanilla Sky's Kutaisi to Mestia flight is 50 GEL, with the same weather rule as the Tbilisi one. Our Kutaisi Airport guide covers the 30 GEL coaches from the terminal into town.

Driving yourself

The drive is 463 km: the E60 to Senaki, north to Zugdidi, then the Enguri gorge road through Jvari, Khaishi and Dizi to Mestia, about seven and a half hours without stops. The gorge road is sealed throughout, narrow and one lane wide in a few places after the 2024 slips, and inside Localrent's permitted area, so a compact handles it in daylight; the road on from Mestia to Ushguli is the one the contract restricts, allowed with the travel authorization option from 1 May to 30 September only, as the car rental guide explains. Fuel for the one-way run is roughly 120 GEL. Do not plan to drive it in the dark. On 11 October 2026 Localrent listed 1,144 cars for a Tbilisi pickup, 749 of them with all-wheel drive, which is what we would choose for Svaneti in any month but July and August.

Where each option lands in Mestia

The vans from Zugdidi and the direct marshrutka stop by Seti Square in the middle of town, within a ten-minute walk of most guesthouses; Budget Georgia's transfer ends outside the Credo Bank on Tamar Mepe Street a few hundred metres away; GoTrip drivers take you to the door. The airstrip is on the edge of town, a short taxi ride, and Bolt does not work in Mestia, so agree the fare (10 GEL is the ceiling our guide gives) before you get in. Whichever way you arrive, the last ATMs before Ushguli are in Mestia, and the Mestia guide has the museums, the cable car and the guesthouses we would book.

Svan is its own language, but Georgian is what the drivers in Zugdidi and the station staff in Tbilisi use, and knowing the dozen Georgian phrases that matter in a van yard (where to, how much, is there a seat, stop here) is the difference between getting the last place in the van and watching it leave.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Looking for the night train. It stopped in 2020. The 08:15 day train and the afternoon van is the route, or the 22:30 Metro Georgia coach if you want to travel overnight.
  • Flying out the day before your international flight. Visual flight rules, no rebooking, next seat possibly days away. Fly up, drive down.
  • Turning up for a summer train. One train a day; about 230 seats were on sale for 17 October when we looked. Book on tkt.ge the day the window opens, 20 days ahead.
  • Missing the shuttle. The Vanilla Sky van leaves First Republic Square exactly two hours before the flight and the airline says it does not wait. Natakhtari is 23 km out and a Bolt there is not cheap.
  • Packing 20 kg for the plane. The limit is 15 kg including hand luggage. Leave a bag at your Tbilisi hotel.
  • Taking the direct van because it is simpler. It costs more than the train and van, arrives at the same hour, and you cannot stand up for nine hours.
  • Driving the gorge after dark. One-lane sections, no lighting, cattle. Leave Tbilisi by 08:00 or sleep in Zugdidi.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Tbilisi to Mestia?
The 08:15 train to Zugdidi (17 GEL second class, 5 hours 21 minutes, train 870 on tkt.ge for 17 October 2026) and the 40 GEL van that waits for it outside Zugdidi station, about four hours up the gorge, puts you in Mestia around 18:00 for 57 GEL. Alternatives on 11 October 2026: the 90 GEL Vanilla Sky flight from Natakhtari, the 60 GEL direct marshrutka at 07:00, Metro Georgia's 22:30 overnight coach to Zugdidi for 30 GEL, or a GoTrip driver from 634 GEL per car.
Is there a train from Tbilisi to Mestia?
Not to Mestia itself. The railway ends at Zugdidi, 130 km short, and one train a day runs there: 08:15 to 13:36, 17 GEL in second class, 29 in first, 44 in business, on tkt.ge on 11 October 2026. The overnight train stopped in 2020. From Zugdidi the vans to Mestia take about four hours for 40 GEL.
How much is the flight from Tbilisi to Mestia?
90 GEL (about $35) for an adult, 63 GEL for children aged 3 to 12 and free for infants on Vanilla Sky's schedule page read on 11 October 2026, plus a 3.5 percent card surcharge. It leaves from Natakhtari airfield, 23 km north of Tbilisi, with a free shuttle from First Republic Square two hours before. Cloud cancels it and the fare is refunded; book the flight up and the road down.
How long does it take to get from Tbilisi to Mestia?
About ten hours by train and van, nine to ten in the direct marshrutka, 7 hours 18 minutes of driving with a GoTrip driver, and under an hour in the air plus the two-hour shuttle lead at Natakhtari. Nothing on the road is quicker than seven hours because the last 130 km from Zugdidi is a mountain road.
Is it better to go to Mestia from Tbilisi or Kutaisi?
Kutaisi, if your flights allow it. It is 236 km from Mestia instead of 463: the morning van is 50 GEL and six and a half to seven and a half hours, Budget Georgia's shared transfer leaves the centre at 08:00 for 80 to 120 GEL from May to October, a GoTrip driver was from 334 GEL per car on 11 October 2026, and Vanilla Sky flies it for 50 GEL.
Can I drive from Tbilisi to Mestia in a rental car?
Yes. The road via Zugdidi and the Enguri gorge is sealed and inside Localrent's permitted area; it is about seven and a half hours and should be done in daylight. Only the road on from Mestia to Ushguli is restricted, to cars with the travel authorization option between 1 May and 30 September. Localrent listed 1,144 cars in Tbilisi on 11 October 2026, all-wheel-drive Subarus from about $29 a day.
