Kakheti Wine Day Trip from Tbilisi: Tour, Driver or Van?

Kakheti is Georgia's wine region, an hour and a half east of Tbilisi across the Gombori Pass or along the new highway to Sighnaghi, and a day there is the classic excursion out of the capital for a reason: the cellars are close, the tastings are cheap and the lunch is enormous. The complication is the road home. Georgia's blood-alcohol limit is 0.03 percent, one glass takes you over it, and the police check the Kakheti highway, so a wine day is really a transport decision. The group tour

The Kakheti tour is the standard product out of Tbilisi and there are dozens of near-identical versions of it. The recipe is fixed: a bakery stop for bread and cheese at Badiauri on the highway, Bodbe convent, an hour in Sighnaghi, lunch at a restaurant with a valley view, then one or two wineries, usually a large producer with a guided tour and a family cellar with three wines poured at a table. Nine tastings sounds like a lot; each pour is small, and the day is paced so you are back in Tbilisi in the evening without having been drunk since lunch.

Three listings cover the range. The busiest, Kakheti and Sighnaghi with nine tastings, was $19 a head on 24 September 2026, down from a $38 list price, with 939 reviews: a bakery, a paid zipline stop, Sighnaghi, the plane trees in Telavi, four wines at Wineland and three at a family cellar, meeting at the bus stop on Europe Square below the Metekhi bridge. The one GetYourGuide flags as its top pick, the Kakheti wine region tour with nine tastings, was $39 (from $78) with 3,203 reviews: the same bakery, Bodbe, a Sighnaghi walk, lunch, three qvevri wines at a family in Manavi and five at KTW, meeting at Avlabari metro. The third, Kakheti with ten premium tastings and sunset, was $29 (from $39) with 3,312 reviews: KTW's warehouse, a small cellar called Vineria for lunch and more tastings, Bodbe, and a late start, gathering at the bicycle monument at 10:30 for an 11:00 departure, so it returns after dark. All three run about ten hours and can be cancelled up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund.

What to check before you book, because the listing pages bury it: the meeting point (Avlabari, Europe Square and the bicycle monument are all in the centre, but they are not the same place), whether lunch is included or 45 GEL on top, whether the tastings are in the base price or a paid option (on the ten-tastings tour they are an option you tick), and how long you get in Sighnaghi, which on several tours is under an hour. The reviews on the busiest listing say the lunch comes late, so eat breakfast. The bakery stop costs 3 GEL in cash and the family cellars sell bottles, so carry lari. We plan our own days in Kakheti and have not taken these tours; the comparison here is of the listings, not of the operators.

A driver for the day

This is what we do with visitors, and it is the option that gets better the more of you there are. GoTrip's price is per car, fixed before you book, and the driver waits at each stop for as long as you like; on 24 September 2026 the cheapest car from Tbilisi was 141 GEL (about $54) to Telavi, 93 km and about 1 h 43 min, 191 GEL (about $73) to Sighnaghi, 110 km and 1 h 47 min, and 206 GEL (about $79) to Kvareli, 143 km and 2 h 09 min, in each case a Ford Fusion in comfort class. Those are one-way figures. For a day trip you build the route on gotrip.ge with the cellars as stops and Tbilisi as the final destination, and the site prices the whole loop before you pay; as a rough budget, allow about double the one-way price for a same-day return with two or three stops, which is our estimate, not a quoted fare. Four people sharing a 380 GEL day pay 95 GEL each, about the price of the mid-range group tour, for a private car and their own choice of cellars.

The other private option is a driver arranged through a Sighnaghi or Telavi guesthouse, who takes a set circuit of wineries for about 70 to 100 GEL a person for the full day; it works best if you are sleeping in Kakheti and can let the guesthouse book it the evening before. GetYourGuide also lists private trips, such as the eight-hour Khareba wine cave loop above at $181 per group of up to three with pickup at your address, but read the small print: on that one the tastings and monastery tickets are not included, so it is a driver with a fixed route, not a tour.

With a driver the day is yours, so plan it around geography. Tsinandali Estate, Shumi and Shalauri sit together outside Telavi, which makes a compact day at 141 GEL each way; Khareba's tunnels, Kindzmarauli Corporation and Wine Yard N1 are all around Kvareli on the far side of the valley; Pheasant's Tears is in Sighnaghi itself. Trying to do both sides of the valley and Sighnaghi in one day from Tbilisi means four hours in the car and twenty minutes per cellar. Pick a side. The Samgori van

The public option is the marshrutka from the Navtlughi terminal beside Samgori metro station on the red line, not Didube and not Ortachala, which is where older guides send people. Sighnaghi vans are timetabled at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 18:00, cost 15 GEL (about $6) paid to the driver, and take 2 to 2.5 hours; check with the driver that the van goes up to Sighnaghi, because some terminate at Tsnori on the valley floor, a 10 GEL taxi below the town. Telavi vans leave the same yard through the day until about 17:00 for 12 to 15 GEL. Shared taxis wait outside Isani metro, one stop before Samgori, and leave when four seats are sold: 25 to 30 GEL a seat to Sighnaghi, 20 to Telavi. What the van gives you is Sighnaghi on foot, and that is a good wine day in itself. Pheasant's Tears pours its own natural wines at its restaurant on Baratashvili Street, Okro's is a short walk away, the walls and the view over the Alazani valley cost nothing, and Bodbe convent is 2.5 km out, a half-hour walk or a 3-minute taxi, with a strict dress code covered in our church etiquette guide. What it does not give you is the valley: Tsinandali, Khareba and the family cellars in the villages are 30 to 60 km from Sighnaghi with no public transport between them, so the van and the wineries guide's big names do not combine in a day. Vans back to Tbilisi leave the Sighnaghi bus stand roughly every two hours between 07:00 and 18:00; from Telavi's new bus station they run at least hourly from 09:00 to 21:00 for 15 GEL, which is why Telavi is the safer base for a late return. On a Friday afternoon or Saturday morning be at Samgori 30 to 45 minutes early, because the van leaves when it fills.

Driving yourself

A rental car is the wrong tool for a one-day wine trip unless one of you genuinely does not drink, and we would say that even though we rent from Localrent every time we go. The limit is 0.03 percent, in practice zero, the police set up on the highway back into Tbilisi, and a tasting in Kakheti is not the polite half-inch you get in a European cellar door. Where a car does make sense is a two or three-night loop with a sober driver each day, which is the Kakheti road trip, or a family day where the driver is happy with the bread, the cheese and the view. If that is you, the numbers are good: on 24 September 2026 Localrent's Tbilisi listing had 870 cars, a Kia Rio or Volkswagen Polo automatic at $25.65 a day with no deposit and free cancellation, and the roads to Sighnaghi and Telavi are paved all the way. What each way costs per person

The table puts the four options side by side for one, two and four people, before wine. Tour figures are the $19 and $39 group listings above at the NBG rate of 2.62 GEL to the dollar on 24 September 2026, with the optional 45 GEL lunch added because almost everyone takes it. The driver row is our estimate of a same-day Tbilisi to Sighnaghi loop with two stops at about 380 GEL per car, double the 191 GEL one-way fare; the exact figure appears on gotrip.ge once you add your stops. The van row is two 15 GEL fares plus a 10 GEL taxi each way to Bodbe. The car row is Localrent's $25.65 compact plus about 55 GEL of fuel for the 220 km round trip at the 3.75 GEL a litre on our road trip page, our estimate.

Add the tastings: family cellars from 20 GEL a person or 80 GEL with a full meal, Khareba's tunnel tour 35 GEL, Kindzmarauli Corporation about 20, Tsinandali's museum 10 GEL with five wines for 35. On the tours those are inside the ticket, which is why a $19 day exists at all: you visit the producers the operator has an arrangement with, and they hope you leave with a bottle. Which cellars each way reaches

The honest way to choose is by the cellar, not the vehicle. The group tours run a fixed circuit of large producers who can seat forty people at once: KTW's warehouse and Wineland on the tours above, plus one family in Manavi under contract, and Khareba's tunnels on the private trip. You will not see Pheasant's Tears, Shalauri or TEMI on a group tour, and you will not choose. A driver reaches everything the wineries guide lists, including the Telavi-side cluster of Tsinandali, Shumi and Shalauri in one compact day, or the Kvareli side with Khareba, Kindzmarauli and TEMI at Gremi. The van reaches Sighnaghi's own cellars and Bodbe, and nothing on the valley floor. A car reaches everything, for one sober person.

If the point is the qvevri and the family table rather than a tunnel and a shop, the driver wins even for two people, because a 190 GEL share buys a day at cellars where the person pouring made the wine. If the point is to see Kakheti once, drink well and let someone else worry, the $19 tour is the best value excursion in Georgia and we would not talk anyone out of it.

Timing and the season

Late September and October is rtveli, the harvest, when the valley is at work and several family cellars let guests pick and press before feeding them; the rtveli guide lists who takes visitors and what it costs. In those weeks book the tour two or three days ahead and the driver the day before, and avoid a Saturday on the Gombori road if you can. The large wineries take walk-ins all day year-round, with a call ahead wise in winter; the family cellars want a message the day before in any season, and a driver can make that call for you in Georgian. Bodbe is busiest late morning, so go before 10:00, and the Sighnaghi Museum, the town's one paid sight at 30 GEL, is closed on Mondays.

Whatever you choose, leave Tbilisi early. The tours leave in the morning, the latest at 11:00; the 09:00 van gives you the most Sighnaghi, and a driver booked for 08:30 gets you to a Telavi cellar before the groups. Wear closed shoes for the cellars, take a scarf for Bodbe, and carry lari in cash: the family cellars and the bakery do not take cards.

Mistakes to avoid

• Going to Didube for the Kakheti van. Sighnaghi and Telavi vans leave from the Navtlughi terminal at Samgori metro. Didube serves the north and west.
• Assuming the tastings are in the tour price. On the ten-tastings listing they are a ticked option, and lunch is 45 GEL extra on nearly all of them. Read the Includes box before you book.
• Booking a driver to both sides of the valley. Sighnaghi, Telavi and Kvareli make a triangle with an hour between each corner. One side per day, or sleep in Kakheti.
• Letting the driver "just try one". The limit is 0.03 percent and the checkpoints are on the road home. If nobody will stay dry, it is a tour or a GoTrip car.
• Taking the van to Sighnaghi for the valley wineries. There is no public transport from the town to Tsinandali or Kvareli. The van is for Sighnaghi's own cellars, Bodbe and the view.
• Turning up with only a card. Bakery stops, family cellars and the Bodbe taxi want cash. There are ATMs in Sighnaghi and Telavi, not in the villages.
