Sighnaghi

Sighnaghi and Bodbe

Getting there. Tbilisi to Sighnaghi: Marshrutka from the Navtlughi terminal at Samgori metro to Sighnaghi, 15 GEL, 2 to 2.5 hours. Timetabled at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 18:00.

Walk the 4.5 km town wall and save the ramparts for sunset. Bodbe convent, where St Nino is buried, is 2 km below town, free, 10:00 to 18:30.

Cellars and tastings with a driver. Georgia's drink-driving limit is 0.03 percent, so treat it as zero; guesthouses arrange a driver for about 70 to 100 GEL a person for the day.

Getting there. Sighnaghi to Tbilisi: Marshrutka back to Samgori from the stand on 9 April Street in Sighnaghi, 15 GEL, 2 to 2.5 hours.

A night in the city between trips: laundry, a good dinner, and the yard for the next leg in the morning.

Getting there. Tbilisi to Stepantsminda: Marshrutka from Didube, 20 GEL, 3 to 3.5 hours, about eleven departures between 08:00 and 19:00 in summer. Some drivers add 5 GEL for a big bag.

Walk up to the church, about 7 km return and an hour and a quarter up, or take a 4x4 from town. Stay the night: the church is best before the day tours arrive.

A taxi to the trailhead, or from June the shared minibuses from the Mountain Travel Agency office on the main road. Rental cars are not allowed on either road.

The two Gveleti waterfalls are 30 minutes on foot from the highway, a 50 to 60 GEL taxi; the Dariali monastery at the mouth of the gorge has a cafe with the monks' own cheese and wine.

Back in Tbilisi

Getting there. Stepantsminda to Tbilisi: Marshrutka from the small bus station east of the river, 20 GEL cash, about eleven a day in summer and fewer out of season. In winter leave by 14:30 to cross the Jvari Pass in daylight.

How the planner builds a route

It starts from Tbilisi, where most flights land and every transport line meets. Each region scores points for the interests you tick: Kakheti for wine, Kazbegi and Svaneti for mountains, Kutaisi and the monasteries for history, Batumi for the sea. The best-scoring regions go in while they still fit, with their minimum nights for your pace and a night back in Tbilisi to close each trip out of the capital. Spare nights go to the regions you care about most, then to day trips from Tbilisi.

The west is one loop: Kutaisi, then Svaneti, then the coast, then the train home to Tbilisi. Svaneti always comes with a night in Kutaisi, because Mestia is too far to reach from Tbilisi and still enjoy the first day. Pick a summer month with mountains ticked and enough days, and the Mestia nights turn into the four-day walk to Ushguli.

Marshrutka fares and yards come from our marshrutka guide, trains from the tkt.ge timetable in our trains guide, and the Mestia vans from wander-lush's Mestia transport guide updated 17 August 2026. Driver prices are per car, the cheapest on each gotrip.ge route on 17 September 2026, with GoTrip's route length and time, which we also use as the driving time for a rental car. One leg has no fare we could confirm, and the table says so.

If a driver makes more sense

Switch the planner to hired driver and the legs change to per-car prices. They are fixed before you leave, waiting and photo stops are included, and you pay the driver in cash at the end. These are the four legs people ask us about most, at the cheapest car on each route this week.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Georgia?

Seven days covers Tbilisi, Kakheti and Kazbegi at a steady pace. Svaneti needs ten or more, because Mestia is 463 km from Tbilisi and a full travel day each way, and a trip that also takes in the coast wants two weeks. Set the planner to your days and watch which regions fit.

Why does the route keep going back to Tbilisi?

Because the transport does. Every marshrutka to Kazbegi leaves from Didube and every van to Sighnaghi from the Navtlughi terminal at Samgori, so Kakheti to Kazbegi runs through the capital whichever way you travel. A night in Tbilisi between trips costs less than a day spent crossing it with a bag.

Can I do all of this without a car?

Yes. Pick marshrutka and train and every leg shows the yard, the fare and the journey time we checked. The one weak link is the way out of Mestia: all shared transport runs down the Zugdidi road, and the departure times change with the season, so ask your guesthouse the day before.

Is a driver worth it over the marshrutka?

For two or more people with bags, often. A GoTrip driver from Tbilisi to Kazbegi was 210 GEL per car on 17 September 2026, which is 70 GEL each for three people against 20 GEL for a van seat, and the driver stops at Ananuri and Gudauri on the way. For one person the van wins on price every time.

What if I fly into Kutaisi?

The planner assumes Tbilisi, where most flights land. From Kutaisi Airport a coach to Tbilisi leaves after every flight for 30 GEL and takes 3.5 to 4 hours, so start the plan with a day less and read our Kutaisi Airport transfers guide for the rest.

Why are Tusheti, Vardzia and Racha missing?

The planner sticks to bases it can route honestly in any month. The Tusheti road is a summer-only mountain track that rental contracts exclude, Vardzia is a long detour best done from Akhaltsikhe or Borjomi, and Racha is far easier with a car than without. Our guides to each cover how to add them.
