Kazbegi Day Trip from Tbilisi: Tour, Driver or Van (2026)

Kazbegi is 152 km and about three hours from Tbilisi, so a day trip is possible and thousands of people do it every week. This page puts the three ways of doing it side by side, with the prices read on 4 October 2026, a timed plan for each, and an honest list of what a single day leaves out.

Quick answer

Alone or on a budget: the 20 GEL (about $8) van from Didube at 08:00, a 4x4 or the walk up to Gergeti, and a van back by 15:30. Two to four people who want the stops: a GoTrip driver at a fixed 210 GEL (about $81) per car each way, 230 GEL for a four-seat car. Anyone who wants zero planning: a group tour from $16 to $26 with Ananuri, the Gudauri viewpoint and about 30 minutes at the church, plus 20 GEL cash for the 4x4. If you can spare a night, spare it.

Stepantsminda, the town everyone still calls Kazbegi, sits at the top of the Georgian Military Highway under a 5,054 m volcano, with Gergeti Trinity Church on a ridge above it at 2,170 m. The road there climbs the Aragvi valley past Ananuri, through the ski resort of Gudauri and over the 2,379 m Jvari Pass, and the drive is half the point. A Kazbegi day trip from Tbilisi means about six hours in a vehicle for two to three hours at the top, and the question is only how you want to spend those six hours: in a van with locals for 20 GEL, in a car with a driver who stops where you say, or in a tour minibus with a guide and a fixed timetable.

We have done the road by van and with GoTrip drivers more times than we can count, and we read every tour itinerary for this page; the honest summary is this. The van is cheapest and gives you the most time in Stepantsminda, but it stops nowhere on the way. The driver costs ten times as much for one person and about the same as the tour for four, and gives you the stops and the time at the church that the tour does not. The tour is the only option that needs no thought at all, and it pays for that with half an hour at the one place you came to see. Our Kazbegi guide covers the town, the walks and the valleys; this page is about the day.

Tour, driver or van compared

OptionCost, hours and what you get
Group tour$16 to $26 a person on GetYourGuide on 4 October 2026, plus 20 GEL cash for the 4x4 to the church and your own lunch. 10.5 to 12 hours door to door with Zhinvali, Ananuri, a Pasanauri lunch stop and the Gudauri viewpoint on the way, then 30 minutes at Gergeti (one operator gives an hour). A guide, a fixed meeting point near Freedom Square or Avlabari, free cancellation to 24 hours.
GoTrip driver210 GEL (about $81) per car each way for a three-seat Ford Fusion, 230 to 240 GEL for a four-seat Elantra, Camry or Fusion, fixed on the site before you book, 3 h 06 without stops. Stop where you like for as long as you like, leave when you like, be collected at your door. Book the return as a second transfer or ask the driver for a day price.
Didube van20 GEL (about $8) a seat each way, cash at the ticket desk, eleven departures a day from 08:00 to 19:00 in the autumn timetable, 3 to 3.5 hours, no stops. The most time in town of the three if you take the 08:00, and your afternoon return depends on finding a van with a seat.
Rental carFrom about $24 a day on Localrent for a no-deposit compact when the night shift read the Tbilisi listing on 4 October 2026. Only worth it for a day trip if you already have the car; the highway guide has the driving notes and its own cars block.

The number that decides it is usually the party size. One person pays 40 GEL for the van and 420 GEL for the car; four people pay 160 GEL for the van and 460 GEL for a four-seat car, which is 115 GEL (about $44) a head for a private day with the stops you choose. The tour sits between them at every party size once you add the 4x4 and lunch.

PartyPer person, there and back
One personVan 40 GEL. Tour $16 to $26 plus 20 GEL for the 4x4, about 60 to 90 GEL in all. GoTrip 420 GEL, the whole car both ways.

Lunch20 to 40 GEL for khinkali and a salad in Pasanauri or Stepantsminda. The tours stop at a restaurant of their choosing and you pay your own bill.

Prices read on 4 October 2026 at the National Bank rate of 2.60 GEL to the dollar; they move with the season and the operator.

The group tour, hour by hour

Every operator runs the same loop, because there is only one road: Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri, lunch in Pasanauri, the Gudauri viewpoint with the Soviet friendship monument, Stepantsminda, the 4x4 up to Gergeti, and back the same way. The itineraries printed on the listings on 4 October 2026 give 20 minutes at the reservoir, 40 to 45 at Ananuri, an hour to an hour and a half for lunch, 30 to 45 at the viewpoint and 30 minutes at the church; one operator gives the church a full hour. Most meet at 1 Galaktion Tabidze Street by Freedom Square or at Europe Square, one drops you at Avlabari metro, and the small-group operator collects from hotels. A reviewer on the 10-hour tour wrote that the 08:30 meeting became a 09:00 departure and roadworks on the highway stretched the day to 13 hours, which is the right expectation: the time printed is the minimum.

  1. 1

08:30 to 09:00, meet in central Tbilisi

Freedom Square, Europe Square or your hotel, depending on the operator. Bring cash for the 4x4 (20 GEL a person) and lunch, a layer for 2,000 m, and covered knees and shoulders for the church.

  2. 2

10:00 to 11:30, Zhinvali and Ananuri

A photo stop above the reservoir, then the fortress: two churches inside the walls and the carved facade. Forty minutes is enough here.

  3. 3

12:00 to 13:30, lunch in Pasanauri

The khinkali town. The group eats where the guide stops; budget 20 to 40 GEL and expect the 8 to 18 percent service charge most restaurants add.

  4. 4

    14:00 to 14:45, Gudauri viewpoint

The friendship monument on the cliff edge at about 2,380 m, honey tasting at a roadside stall on most tours. The pass and the snow start here.

  5. 5

15:15 to 16:15, Stepantsminda and Gergeti

The minibus parks in town; you pay the 4x4 driver and ride ten minutes up to the church, get about 30 minutes, ride down. Walking up is not an option on the group timetable.

  6. 6

19:00 to 21:00, back in Tbilisi

Ten and a half to twelve hours after you left, later if the road is slow. Most tours include a wine or honey tasting stop on the way down.

Two listings worth knowing about that did not fit the block. A second flexible-return tour (From Tbilisi: Kazbegi and Gudauri Tour with Flexible Return, $18 on 4 October, 227 reviews) runs an eight-hour version and collects you in Stepantsminda at 15:45 to 16:00 on the day you choose to come back. And for a group that wants the valleys rather than the viewpoints, True 4WD tour Kazbegi, Truso, Gudauri, Ananuri takes six people in a 4x4 into Truso's travertines and the abandoned village of Ketrisi from $109, June to October only; search either title on GetYourGuide.

The GoTrip driver, your own timetable

GoTrip is what we use for Kazbegi with two or more people. You pick a car on the Tbilisi to Stepantsminda route page, the price is fixed per car before you book, and you add stops on the booking or just ask the driver. On 4 October 2026 the route page gave 152 km and 3 h 06 without stops; the cheapest car was a Ford Fusion at 210 GEL (about $81) for three passengers and two suitcases, then Toyota Priuses at 219 to 222 GEL with room for three bags, and the first four-seat cars were a Hyundai Elantra at 230 and a Toyota Camry at 235. The Stepantsminda to Tbilisi page priced the return identically, from 210. For five or more, filter the route page by passenger number and expect a minivan to cost more; none appeared in the first 27 cars when we read it.

A row of boxy old 4x4 minivans waiting for passengers on the main square of Stepantsminda with drivers talking beside them and a snow-capped peak behind
The 4x4s on the square in Stepantsminda. On a tour the ride up is 20 GEL a seat; with your own driver, agree the price and the waiting time before you get in, or walk.

The day runs the way you want it, which is the whole reason to pay. The version we would book: an 08:00 pickup, thirty minutes at Ananuri while the coaches are still in Tbilisi, a quick stop at the Gudauri viewpoint, and the car in Stepantsminda by 11:30. From there, either the walk up to Gergeti (about 7 km return with roughly 430 m of climb, 60 to 75 minutes up and 90 down) while the driver waits, or a 4x4 from the square. The road to the church is surfaced well enough for a sedan in summer, but whether your GoTrip driver will take a Prius up it is their call, so ask when you book. Lunch in town at 14:00, leave at 15:30, Tbilisi by 18:30 with the pass behind you in daylight. Nothing on the tour timetable gets you an empty church yard; this does, if you skip the stops on the way up and go straight to the 4x4.

The Didube van, 20 GEL each way

The marshrutka is the way most Georgians and most backpackers go, and for one person it is not close: 40 GEL for the round trip against 420 for a car. The vans leave from the main part of the Didube yard, directly outside Didube metro on the red line, with their own ticket desk, eleven times a day in the autumn timetable: 08:00, 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:30, 15:30, 17:00, 18:00 and 19:00. The 08:00 to 11:00 departures fill first, especially on Saturdays and in July and August, and a full van leaves early, so be at the desk 30 to 40 minutes ahead with cash. A driver may ask 5 GEL for a suitcase. The van stops for nothing but fuel: no Ananuri, no viewpoint, and the Jvari Pass goes past the window.

A hand passing lari notes through a ticket kiosk window at a minibus yard with white vans behind
The Kazbegi desk at Didube sells a paper ticket before you board, cash only. Buy it, keep it, then find the van and claim a seat with your bag.
  1. 1

    07:20, Didube metro

Red line, 1 GEL. Out of the exit, through the market, into the main part of the yard; the Kazbegi vans and their desk are the busiest thing in it. Buy the 20 GEL ticket, claim a seat.

  2. 2

    08:00 to 11:30, the highway

Three to three and a half hours with one stop, over the pass and down into town. You arrive at the small bus station on the east side of the river, a few minutes from the square.

  3. 3

    11:30 to 15:00, Gergeti

Walk up on the stream path from Gergeti village (an hour and a quarter up, 90 minutes down) or pay a 4x4 driver on the square. The gates are open 09:00 to 17:00. You have about two hours more at the top than any tour group.

  4. 4

15:00, lunch and the van back

Vans to Tbilisi leave from the same small station when they fill, 20 GEL cash, about eleven a day in summer and fewer out of season. Shared taxis wait there too at 40 to 60 GEL a seat. Take the first one with a seat; the flow thins after the tour coaches leave.

  5. 5

    18:30 to 19:30, Didube

Back where you started, and dark by then from mid-October. In winter leave Stepantsminda by 14:30 so the pass is behind you in daylight.

The destination card in the van's windscreen is in Georgian, and so is the ticket. Having it written on your phone works, but being able to read სტეფანწმინდა (Stepantsminda) and ყაზბეგი (Kazbegi) yourself takes a couple of hours of practice; EasyGeorgian's alphabet lessons are where we would start.

What a day trip leaves out

Three things, and whether they matter decides whether you stay. First, the church without the crowd: every tour arrives between about 14:00 and 16:00, and the yard at 09:00 with the mountain clear and nobody on the ridge is a different place. Mount Kazbek clouds over most afternoons in summer, so a day-tripper's photograph is often of a church under a grey wall. Second, the valleys. Truso, with its travertine terraces and mineral springs, Juta under the Chaukhi towers, Sno and the Gveleti waterfalls are each a half or full day from Stepantsminda by taxi or summer shuttle, and none of them fits around six hours of driving. Third, the evening: Stepantsminda at dusk with the church lit on its ridge, dinner in town, and a cold clear morning.

Gergeti Trinity Church and its bell tower on a grassy ridge above Stepantsminda in autumn, with the bare Caucasus wall behind
Gergeti at 2,170 m on an autumn morning, before the tour minibuses. The track on the left is the 4x4 road; the footpath climbs in front with the stream on the left.

Winter and the shoulder months

From December the day trip gets harder in every version. The Roads Department closes the Gudauri to Kobi section over the Jvari Pass whenever avalanche danger is high, sometimes for days, and the tour listings say outright that from late November to mid-April the trip may not reach Stepantsminda; if the pass is shut, Gudauri is as far as anyone goes and the tours turn round there. Winter tyres are compulsory on the mountain sections, and the vans and drivers run on a shorter day, so leaving Stepantsminda by 14:30 is the rule from November to March. Check georoad.ge the night before, and if you are on a tour, read the cancellation terms for a road closure before you book. The winter guide and the Kazbegi and Svaneti timing guide have the months in detail; October, when we wrote this, is the best of them, with the birches yellow along the highway and the vans still on the full timetable.

Mistakes to avoid

MistakeWhat to do instead
Taking the 10:00 vanYou arrive at 13:30 with the coaches and leave with them. The 08:00 van is the whole advantage of going alone.
Booking a tour for the churchThirty minutes at Gergeti is what you get. If the church is the point, take the van or a driver, or pick the operator that prints an hour.
Arriving at the church in shortsKnees and shoulders covered for everyone; women need a long skirt and a headscarf, and wrap skirts are lent at the door. Our church etiquette guide has the rest.
Forgetting cashThe van, the ticket, the 4x4 and most lunch spots want lari in notes. Nothing on this route takes a card reliably.
Waiting for the last vanReturns leave when full and get cut when empty. Be at the station by 15:30 outside summer.
Doing it on the day of your flightVans do not go to the airport and a closed pass strands you. Book a driver, or do the trip earlier in the stay.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do Kazbegi as a day trip from Tbilisi?
Yes. It is 152 km and about three hours each way on the Georgian Military Highway, so a day trip gives you two to three hours in Stepantsminda and at Gergeti Trinity Church. Group tours from $16, a GoTrip driver from 210 GEL per car each way or the 20 GEL van from Didube all do it; a night in town is better if you can spare one.
How much does a Kazbegi day trip cost?
By van, 40 GEL (about $15) return plus 20 GEL for the 4x4 if you do not walk. By group tour, $16 to $26 a person on 4 October 2026 plus 20 GEL cash for the 4x4 and your own lunch, so about 60 to 90 GEL in all. By GoTrip driver, 420 GEL per car for both legs in a three-seat Ford Fusion, 460 to 470 for a four-seat car, which is 115 to 118 GEL a head for four people.
Is the tour or the marshrutka better for Kazbegi?
The van if you are alone or want time at the church: the 08:00 departure puts you in Stepantsminda by 11:30 with the afternoon free. The tour if you want Ananuri and the Gudauri viewpoint without thinking, and accept about 30 minutes at Gergeti. For two to four people a GoTrip driver beats both, because you get the stops and the time at the top.
Do Kazbegi tours include the 4x4 to Gergeti Trinity Church?
Usually not. On the listings we read on 4 October 2026 the ride is 20 GEL per person in cash on top of the ticket, paid to the 4x4 driver in Stepantsminda; one small-group tour includes it. The tours do not allow time to walk up.
How long is the drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi?
GoTrip’s route page gives 152 km and 3 h 06 without stops. The vans take 3 to 3.5 hours with one break; the tours take 10.5 to 12 hours for the whole loop because of the stops at Zhinvali, Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri. Roadworks and summer weekend traffic add an hour or more.
Can I stay overnight in Kazbegi and come back later?
Yes, three ways. Two GetYourGuide tours sell a flexible return: ride up with the group, stay as many nights as you like, come back with a later group at about 15:45 to 16:00. The Didube van runs both directions for 20 GEL. Or book a GoTrip driver each way; the return page priced the Stepantsminda to Tbilisi leg from 210 GEL on 4 October 2026.
