October is the best all-round month to visit Georgia. Tbilisi averages 20°C by day and 11°C at night with about 164 hours of sunshine, the wine regions are finishing the harvest and turning red, Tbilisoba fills the capital on the first weekend, and the lower trails are at their best. The trade-offs are real but small: the Tusheti road closes, the high passes get their first snow, the coast turns wet, and the days shorten fast, with sunset in Tbilisi moving from 18:44 on 1 October to 17:58 on the 31st. Come in the first half of the month for the mountains, any time for Tbilisi and Kakheti.

We live in Tbilisi, and October is the month we stop leaving the city at weekends and start asking friends to visit. The heat has gone, the light is low and gold, every terrace is full, and the country is busy with the last of rtveli, the grape harvest. The short version of the plan: mountains early, wine country in the middle, Tbilisi any time, coast only if you are flexible. The rest of this page explains why.
October weather by region
Georgia is small enough to drive across in a day and varied enough that October means four different things depending on where you stand. The figures below are published climate normals (1991-2020 where the station has them), so treat them as averages: a single October week can run five degrees either side.

Two things the table hides. First, the mountains cool faster than the lowlands: the gap between Tbilisi and Stepantsminda is about nine degrees by day in October and eleven at night, and the trailheads above Mestia and Kazbegi sit higher still. Second, the western totals are big because the rain comes in heavy bursts; a wet forecast in Kutaisi rarely means a whole day indoors.
Early, mid or late October
October is not one month either. If your dates are flexible, this is how we would choose.

Daylight in October
Georgia stays on UTC+4 all year, so there is no clock change to think about, but the days shrink by almost an hour and a half across the month. Sunrise in Tbilisi moves from about 06:55 on 1 October to 07:30 on the 31st, and sunset from about 18:45 to 18:00 (our own calculation with the standard solar formula; treat it as accurate to five minutes). Batumi runs about a quarter of an hour later at both ends. In practice that means mountain days need to start early, drives across the country should finish before dark, and a 16:00 start on a trail in late October is a mistake.
Tbilisoba and other October events
October is the busiest month of Georgia's festival calendar after the summer. Dates below were checked on 7 September 2026; the ones marked expected follow the usual pattern and are confirmed by the organisers a few weeks out.

Tbilisoba is the one to build a weekend around. It is a two-day city fair: regional food stalls and wine from every district, craft markets, children's shows, an open-air cinema, and evening concerts on the main stages. It is free and it is crowded, and the neighbourhood stages a few streets away from Rike Park are the better part. Our festivals calendar has the full year and the rest of the church holidays.

Kakheti after the harvest
By the first days of October the white grapes are in and the Saperavi is coming down the valley in tractor trailers. Family cellars are pressing, qvevri are being filled, and the marani smells of fermenting juice. This is the last chance to take part in rtveli; by the middle of the month most of Kakheti is done and the work moves to Racha, which picks later. Then the valley changes colour, and that is the better reason to come. From roughly the second week the vine rows turn red and gold with the Greater Caucasus already snow-dusted behind them, and the view from Sighnaghi's walls or the road above Kvareli is the one that ends up on every wall. Wineries are open all month; the larger estates keep their tours running and the family cellars are more relaxed once the picking is over. The Kakheti guide and the wine road trip have the routes.
Getting there without a car is easy: marshrutkas to Telavi (12-15 GEL) and Sighnaghi (15 GEL) leave from the Navtlughi terminal at Samgori metro, and from mid-September to mid-October they fill with Tbilisi families heading home to help, so arrive early on a Friday. With a car you can reach the villages the vans do not serve, which in October is the whole point.
The mountains in October
October in the Caucasus is a short, bright window that closes from the top down. The first half of the month is often the best hiking weather of the year: cold clear mornings, no haze, golden birch and beech below the treeline, and the summer crowds gone. The second half is a forecast-by-forecast affair.
What that means by area:
- Kazbegi. The Georgian Military Highway is open all year and marshrutkas from Didube run daily (20 GEL, about $8, 3 to 3.5 hours). Gergeti Trinity Church and the Truso Valley are fine all month; the Juta to Roshka route over the Chaukhi pass can hold snow from early October, so ask in Juta before you commit. Nights in Stepantsminda average around freezing, so check your guesthouse has heating that works.
- Svaneti. The Mestia to Ushguli trek is usually walkable into mid-October and the birch forests are the reason to do it then. Guesthouses along the route start closing up for the season in October, so book the nights rather than turning up. The Vanilla Sky flight from Natakhtari to Mestia (90 GEL on its September 2026 price list) is the fast way in but cancels in bad weather; have the road as a backup.
- Tusheti. The Abano Pass, the only road in, opened on 20 June in 2026 and closes with the first heavy snowfall, usually between late September and mid-October, sometimes with a day's notice. - Skiing. Not yet. Gudauri may see snow in late October but the lifts do not open until the second half of December. Our winter guide has the season dates and prices.
Tbilisi in October
Tbilisi in October is the best version of the city. The old town balconies look their best framed by yellow plane trees, the view from Narikala takes in both banks of the Mtkvari in colour, and the cafes of Vera and Sololaki move their tables outside for the last time. The opera and theatre seasons reopen, gallery openings cluster in October, and the sulfur baths start to make sense again once the evenings drop to 10°C.
The markets are the other reason. October is when Dezerter Bazaar fills with persimmons, pomegranates, feijoa and walnuts, and when fresh churchkhela, the walnut strings dipped in thickened grape juice, appears still soft from the harvest. Our markets guide covers what to buy and where.
Two practical notes for October 2026. Rustaveli Avenue is closed to traffic for a rebuild until November 2026, so buses including the airport 337 are diverted around it; allow a few extra minutes and check the stop list on the day. And Tbilisi has no district heating: flats rely on their own gas boiler or air-conditioner units in heat mode, and hosts are slow to switch them on. A late-October apartment can be colder inside than out, so check the listing mentions heating before you book.
The coast in October
Batumi in October is a gamble we would not take with a fixed itinerary. The sea is still warm, about 22°C at the start of the month and 19°C by the end, and some years the first ten days are beach weather. But October is the wettest month of the year on the Georgian coast, with around 320 mm of rain over a dozen wet days on the 1981-2010 normals, and a bad week can be four days of it. If you are already in the west for Kutaisi or Svaneti and the forecast is clear, a night in Batumi is a pleasant, half-price end to the trip: the promenade is empty, the restaurants are open, and the Batumi Botanical Garden is good in autumn colour. Getting around in October
Nothing changes with the season except the mountain roads above. Marshrutkas run their full timetables all month: 20 GEL to Kazbegi and 25 GEL to Kutaisi from Didube, 12-15 GEL to Telavi from Samgori, 25-35 GEL to Batumi. The Tbilisi to Batumi train runs four times a day in about four hours for 36 GEL second class or 76 GEL first (tkt.ge fares for September 2026; about $14 and $29), and October is a good month for it because the road through the Rikoti tunnels is slow in rain. If you rent a car, October needs no winter equipment in the lowlands. Since December 2023 winter tyres have been compulsory on government-designated mountain sections, with chains when the police call for them; ask the agency whether your car is fitted if you are driving to Stepantsminda or Mestia late in the month. All-wheel drive is worth having for Svaneti in the second half of October; for Kakheti, Kazbegi and Borjomi any car is fine.
What to pack for October
The problem with October is the range: a 20°C afternoon in Tbilisi and a frosty morning in Stepantsminda in the same week. Layers solve it.
- A light down or fleece layer plus a shell. Mornings and evenings from mid-month want both; afternoons want neither.
- Waterproof shoes or boots if you are going anywhere west of Kutaisi or on any trail. Leaf-covered paths get slippery after rain.
- A headlamp for hikes; the early sunset catches people out every year.
- A scarf. It doubles as a church head covering; the big churches lend wraps at the door, smaller ones may not.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen for the mountains. The October sun at 2,000 m is still strong.

What October costs
October sits between the summer peak and the November trough, and the prices show it. When we checked Booking.com on 7 September 2026 for the Tbilisoba weekend, well-reviewed small hotels within a couple of kilometres of the centre were listing doubles with breakfast at roughly 125 to 185 GEL a night (about $48 to $71), the ibis chain hotels at 120 to 140 GEL, and the design hotels in Vera at 370 to 835 GEL. That is the expensive weekend of the month; the harvest crowds thin out in Kakheti after the second weekend. Restaurants, transport and entry fees do not change with the season. October mistakes to avoid
- Planning Tusheti for October. The pass may already be closed. Go in September or wait until June.
- Booking Tbilisoba weekend late. Old Town hotels tighten weeks ahead. Stay in Vera or Vake and walk in if the centre is full.
- Assuming the dates. Tbilisoba moved to September in 2025 for the elections. Confirm the 2026 dates with City Hall's announcement before you fix flights around it.
- Starting a hike after lunch. Sunset is before 18:30 from the middle of the month and the light goes fast in the valleys.
- Building the trip around Batumi. It is the wettest month on the coast. Make it an optional last night, not the anchor.
- Booking an unheated flat for late October. Check the heating line in the listing; hosts in Tbilisi do not switch on early.
