What sits behind each line

A calculator is only as honest as its inputs, so here they are. Every figure below is a price we read on a live source on the date shown, not a guess or a number carried over from an old blog post. Two of them are marked as our own estimates because no source can give you a price for them.

The three numbers worth arguing with

Most of the total sits in three decisions, and two of them are bookings you make before you arrive.

Where you sleep

Beds are usually half the trip. The gap between a good guesthouse and a design hotel in Tbilisi is larger than the gap between eating street food and eating in restaurants for a week. Outside Tbilisi the ladder flattens: a family guesthouse in Kazbegi or Mestia with breakfast and dinner included often costs less than a mid-range city hotel room and feeds you better.

Whether you rent a car

For two people on a week of day trips, a rental car costs more than marshrutkas and buys you the whole day back. For four people it is usually cheaper than four bus fares plus four tour seats. Switch the transport option above and watch the total move; that comparison is the single most useful thing this page does.

How many days you buy a seat on

A guided day trip to Kazbegi costs about the same as the marshrutka plus a long walk, but it collapses a fourteen-hour day into one you can survive. Booking two of them on a week-long trip is the difference between seeing the mountains and reading about them. Booking six turns a holiday into a coach schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a week in Georgia cost?

On the settings this page opens with, two people travelling mid-range for seven nights with day trips by marshrutka come to about 3,608 GEL, roughly $1,382 for the pair, not counting flights. Backpacking on hostel beds and street food takes that under half. Top-end hotels double it.

Are flights included?

No. The calculator covers what you spend once you land, because airfare depends entirely on where you fly from and when you book. Add your own flight quote to the total.

Where do these prices come from?

Each line is built from a price we checked on a live source: hostel and hotel rates from booking sites, fuel from Wissol's published pump prices, marshrutka fares from the stations, car rental from Localrent, day tours from GetYourGuide. The assumptions table under the calculator shows the number behind every line and when we checked it.

Is Georgia cheaper than the rest of Europe?

Considerably, though not as cheap as it was before 2022. Food, transport and entries are where the gap is widest: a proper restaurant dinner for two without wine runs 60 to 80 GEL, the metro is 1 GEL a ride, and most museum entries sit between 5 and 20 GEL. Hotels in central Tbilisi in high season are the line that surprises people.

What does the 10 percent buffer cover?

The things nobody budgets for: a taxi when the marshrutka has gone, a bottle of wine you did not plan to buy, a paid toilet at a mountain viewpoint, laundry, the guesthouse that only takes cash and charges more than the listing. It is a cushion, not a checked price.

Do prices change much by season?

Yes, and mostly for beds. Tbilisi hotel rates climb in September and October and around New Year; Kazbegi and Svaneti guesthouses are dearest in July and August; Gudauri is a winter market with its own peak. Food, transport and entries barely move.
